Understanding Stimulant Addiction
Stimulants like cocaine and methamphetamines, and even prescription stimulants like Adderall, can be highly destructive as they “speed up” the body’s natural processes and the connection between the brain and body. This can result in higher blood pressure, bursts of energy, increased confidence, and euphoric effects. However, stimulants can also push the body past its natural and safe limits, all while hijacking dopamine receptors in the brain and taking over the reward pathways, leading to repeated use and addiction.
Stimulants like Adderall are also used illicitly in many academic settings, forcing the body to stay awake, alert, and focused out of a perceived ability to increase academic performance, such as when studying over long nights. However, using stimulants is never “safe,” and addiction is always possible. Some common signs of stimulant use and addiction include:

- Increased heart rate and respiratory rate
- Clenching jaws, grinding teeth, or repetitive twitchy movements
- Difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep, or inconsistent sleep cycles
- Sudden weight loss
- Difficulty stopping stimulant use, or craving stimulants when not available, especially to cope with the “crash” that occurs when stimulants wear off
- Increased tolerance leading to heavier use of stimulants to achieve the same effects as before
- Feeling that stimulant use is necessary to start the day or feel “normal”
Harmony Grove Behavioral Health’s addiction treatment center provides comprehensive substance abuse treatment to overcome stimulant addiction, as well as co-occurring mental health disorders and polysubstance use. Combining stimulant addiction treatment with alcohol rehab, dual diagnosis care, and more can ensure that your time at our rehab facility is spent focusing on your unique needs, goals, and challenges while continuing to pursue your goals in daily life outside of our rehab facility.
When to Get Treatment for Stimulant Addiction
Stimulant addiction can affect every aspect of daily life. Continuing to use stimulants after negative consequences to physical or mental health, a loved one expressing concern over drug use or changes in daily life, or feeling that stimulants are necessary for daily functioning are all signs that professional treatment may be necessary to begin an effective healing journey.
Many of those living with stimulant addiction may be aware of the destructive nature of drug use and the need to get help, but feel compelled or urged to continue using regardless, even against their own better judgment. Using more than intended, past failed attempts to cut down on your own, or as stimulant use begins to impede personal life, workplace performance, or academic performance, can also be signs that professional treatment may be necessary.
